What does it mean to study liberal arts in a city like Berlin, where art, history, politics, and philosophy intersect at every corner? Bard College Berlin offers a compelling answer – one that resonates with students who seek both a global perspective and academic depth.

As part of our Global College Spotlight series, we spoke with Stephanie Hausotter, Head of Admissions at Bard College Berlin, to better understand what sets this small, residential college apart, not just from German public universities but also from its international peers. A Liberal Arts College in Berlin—With Dual Degrees

Bard College Berlin is not your typical European university. Though legally a private institution in Germany, it is academically affiliated with Bard College in New York and accredited to award the American Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. Students also have the opportunity to graduate with a German BA, provided they meet national eligibility standards.

This dual framework allows Bard Berlin to offer a U.S.-style 4-year undergraduate curriculum, complete with a core program in intellectual history, small seminar-style classes (averaging just 11 students), and a final senior thesis or creative capstone. Students explore ideas through critical discussion, individualized mentorship, and real-world experience.

Three Distinct BA Programs with Interdisciplinary Depth

At the heart of Bard College Berlin’s academic model are three English-taught BA programs, each designed to bridge theory and practice, local context and global impact:

1. Humanities, the Arts, and Social Thought

This program offers concentrations in Literature and Rhetoric, Art and Aesthetics, and Ethics and Politics. It’s ideal for students with interests in philosophy, literature, cultural theory, and political thought.

2. Economics, Politics, and Social Thought

A strong choice for students exploring global systems, governance, and economic structures. With a mix of theory, policy, and quantitative skills, this program prepares graduates for roles in public policy, international relations, or further graduate study.

3. Artistic Practice and Society (APS)

Blending studio-based practice with critical theory and the liberal arts, APS is for students pursuing visual or performing arts while engaging deeply with society and culture. Bard Berlin offers courses in painting, sculpture, performance, sound art, dance, film, and more.

A New Home for the Arts: Bard Berlin’s Expanded Facilities

One of the most exciting developments for APS students is the opening of Bard College Berlin’s new arts building, known as the Monopol—a state-of-the-art space located just minutes from the main campus.

This modern facility hosts dedicated studios, exhibition space, and classrooms designed for interdisciplinary artistic collaboration. The building is also used for curated exhibitions, often in partnership with professional artists and Berlin’s broader cultural institutions. For example, during Berlin Art Week, students had the rare opportunity to work directly with curators and exhibiting artists through behind-the-scenes sessions held at Monopol.

This new facility not only enhances Bard’s ability to support hands-on, creative education, but also solidifies its role as a true bridge between academic study and Berlin’s thriving arts ecosystem.

Learning Beyond the Classroom: Internships, Berlin, and Study Abroad

Berlin is more than a backdrop—it’s embedded in Bard College Berlin’s academic experience. Whether it’s an art history seminar inside a museum, a theater course involving live performances across the city, or a public policy internship with a Berlin-based NGO, the city itself becomes a classroom.

In their third year, students can choose to participate in the internship program, which includes academic credit and support from Bard’s career services team. Past placements have included galleries, media outlets, political think tanks, and social impact organizations.

Students can also spend a semester or year abroad through the Erasmus+ network (including partners in the Netherlands, France, Sweden, and Italy) or at one of Bard’s own global campuses, such as Bard New York City or Bard Annandale-on-Hudson.

A Campus Community for Global Thinkers

Unlike most urban European universities, Bard College Berlin is a residential campus. Students live in fully furnished apartments within walking distance of classrooms, and enjoy a full meal plan during the week. The setup creates a cohesive, supportive community—especially important for first-year students transitioning to life in Germany.

The college also fosters civic engagement through local initiatives and global partnerships. Students have designed sustainability projects, led English tutoring for local residents, and collaborated with Bard campuses in Kyrgyzstan, Austria, and New York on shared civic projects.
