If you’re looking for a university with a strong international focus, dynamic academic programs, and unparalleled access to global institutions, the Brussels School of Governance (BSoG) should be at the top of your list. With a unique blend of American and European educational models, BSoG prepares students for careers that transcend borders.
Why Study at the Brussels School of Governance?
A Prime Location for International Careers
Brussels is not just the capital of Belgium—it is widely considered the political heart of Europe. Home to key international institutions like the European Union (EU) headquarters and NATO, the city provides an unparalleled environment for students pursuing careers in international relations, law, and global business.
The Brussels School of Governance capitalizes on this prime location by offering a curriculum that integrates real-world learning with strong academic foundations. Students at BSoG don’t just study international affairs; they experience it firsthand, with opportunities to engage with diplomats, policymakers, and industry leaders.
An International and Diverse Student Body
The university fosters a diverse community, welcoming students from over 60 nationalities, creating a truly global classroom where multiple perspectives enrich discussions. This multicultural environment prepares students for careers in international settings, equipping them with a deep understanding of global dynamics.
A Unique Education Model: American and European Blend
Another unique aspect of BSoG is its academic structure, which blends the American educational approach with European degree standards. Unlike many European universities, which tend to follow a rigid curriculum, BSoG emphasizes interactive learning, smaller class sizes, and hands-on experience. Courses follow the American academic calendar, with semesters running from August to December and January to May, making it easier for students from different educational systems to transition smoothly.
Furthermore, the institution’s three-year bachelor’s programs allow students to earn their degree faster compared to the traditional four-year system in the U.S., helping them save both time and tuition costs.
Academic Programs and Specializations
Aside from a variety of graduate and postgraduate programs in fields like Global Security and Strategy, Diplomacy and Global Governance, and an LLM in International and European Law, BSoG offers three distinct undergraduate programs designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for international careers.
1- Bachelor’s in International Affairs
The International Affairs program is the university’s flagship program, preparing students for roles in government, global organizations, NGOs, and policy-making institutions. With Brussels as a backdrop, students are immersed in the world of diplomacy and international relations, gaining direct exposure to current global challenges.
The program includes internships, guest lectures from professionals in the field, and study trips to major institutions such as the European Parliament and the United Nations offices.
2- Bachelor’s in Global Business & Entrepreneurship
For those drawn to the business world, the Global Business & Entrepreneurship program provides an interdisciplinary approach that combines business strategy, international trade, and entrepreneurship. Unlike traditional business schools, BSoG incorporates elements of policy and regulation, giving students a broader perspective on how businesses operate in a globalized world.
The program also allows students to choose specialized minors such as International Finance, Digital Economy, and Family Business, tailoring their education to their career goals.
3- Bachelor’s in International & European Law
The International & European Law program is designed for students interested in legal studies with an international focus. While it is not a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, it serves as an excellent foundation for students considering graduate law studies or careers in international policy, human rights, and European governance.
The coursework delves into EU regulations, trade law, and human rights issues, giving students a comprehensive understanding of the legal frameworks shaping international relations.
BA Preparatory Program for Undecided or Transitioning Students
For students who may need additional preparation before beginning a full-degree program, BSoG also offers a BA Preparatory Program. This one-semester course helps students strengthen academic, language, and study skills, ensuring they are fully equipped for the challenges of higher education. It is also an excellent option for students who are still undecided about their major, as it provides exposure to all three bachelor’s degree tracks.
Admissions and Scholarships
A Holistic Admissions Process
The admissions process at BSoG is highly accessible, with rolling admissions allowing students to apply up to April 30 for non-EU students and August for EU students. The university follows a holistic review approach, considering academic performance, motivation letters, and English proficiency (if applicable) rather than focusing solely on standardized test scores.
Affordable Tuition and Scholarship Opportunities
One of the key advantages of studying at BSoG is its affordable tuition compared to many universities in the U.S. The annual tuition fee is €15,000, a flat rate for all students, regardless of nationality.
Additionally, students with outstanding academic records can apply for merit-based scholarships, which can cover up to 50% of tuition costs. To be eligible for scholarships, applicants must have a GPA equivalent to 3.6 on a 4.0 scale or 37 IB points and submit their applications by March 1 for fall admission and October 15 for spring admission.
Student Life and Career Opportunities
Internships and Networking in Brussels
One of the most exciting aspects of studying at BSoG is the abundance of career-building opportunities available to students. Given its proximity to international organizations, embassies, and multinational corporations, the university offers internships in high-profile institutions. Students can gain hands-on experience at places like EU agencies, law firms, global think tanks, and advocacy groups, significantly boosting their employability after graduation.
Beyond internships, students at BSoG benefit from specialized guest lectures, networking events, and industry-led workshops. The university also organizes a unique Capstone Project, where students work on real-world challenges such as developing policy recommendations for international organizations or creating innovative business solutions.
A Small Community with Big University Resources – Personalized Student Services
Despite its relatively small size—accepting only 60 students per year—BSoG is part of the larger Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) campus, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities, libraries, sports centers, and student organizations. This gives students the best of both worlds: a close-knit academic environment with the resources of a larger university.
BSoG ensures students have the resources and support they need to succeed, both academically and personally. To provide guidance and support throughout their academic journey, each student is assigned an academic advisor from the beginning of their studies. Small class sizes ensure personal attention, dedicated faculty mentors offer academic and career guidance, and an in-house psychologist and well-being office offers mental health support.
Housing and Cost of Living in Brussels
Housing in Brussels is off-campus, but students can choose from various student residences, all within walking distance of the school. Accommodations are individual rooms with private or shared kitchens, and the cost of living in Brussels is relatively affordable, with estimated expenses ranging between €850–1,000 per month, including rent, food, and transportation.
Orientation Week for International Students
For students arriving from abroad, BSoG hosts a comprehensive orientation week before classes begin. This includes guidance on opening a bank account, registering with the local municipality, and adapting to life in Brussels, ensuring a smooth transition into student life.
