Guide for CommonApp and UC App open August 1st

Ready, Set, Apply: The Common App and UC Application Open August 1st

As the calendar edges toward August, many rising seniors find themselves at a turning point. Summer may still be in full swing, but for students applying to college this fall, August 1st marks the beginning of application season—a date that opens two of the most widely used college portals in the country: the Common Application and the University of California (UC) application.

These two platforms-one used by hundreds of colleges worldwide, the other by California’s prestigious public university system-are very different in structure and scope. But they have one important thing in common: they both open on August 1st.

Let’s explore what that means for this year’s applicants, what’s changing (and what’s not), and how students can get a head start—before either portal officially launches.

🎯 The Common App: One Application, Hundreds of Colleges

For students applying to private colleges, liberal arts schools, and even some international institutions, the Common App is often the go-to starting point. This year, the platform is receiving a refreshed look—but the core functionality remains familiar.

Students can already create a Common App account before August 1 or log back into an existing account from a previous cycle. Thanks to a feature called account rollover, information saved in the “Common App” tab—such as your personal details, education history, and activities—will carry over into the new cycle.

However, it’s important to note that college-specific questions and writing supplements will not carry over. Many colleges update these sections every year, and those updates go live on August 1. That’s why Common App recommends the following before July 26:

  • Save any responses you’ve already written to college-specific questions and supplements outside the platform (e.g., in Google Docs or Word).
  • Copy and save the names and email addresses of counselors, teachers, or other recommenders. You will need to re-add and re-invite them after August 1.
  • This ensures you don’t lose any valuable work as Common App resets for the 2025–26 application cycle.

✅ For a full guide on how rollover works, check out the Common App Solutions Center. To get a first glance at the updated look of the new Common App interface, check this overview here or take a detailed look here.

Need some help navigating the process? There’s a free, student-friendly tool that walks you through every section of the Common App, step by step: the AXS Companion, created by Oregon State University. You can check it out here.

🏛️  California Dreaming: The UC Application

While the Common App is used by more than a thousand colleges, the University of California has its own dedicated system. Whether you’re aiming for UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, or any of the nine undergraduate campuses, the UC application is your path in – and it opens on the same day: August 1.

That said, the UC system follows a different calendar. You can start filling out the application on August 1, but you won’t be able to submit it until October 1, with the deadline falling on December 1, 2025.

One major difference: the UC application doesn’t ask for teacher recommendations or SAT/ACT scores. Instead, its focus is squarely on academics, extracurriculars (Activity Section), and your Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) – a set of short-answer prompts designed to give admissions officers a glimpse into your character, values, and achievements.

You’ll choose four out of eight PIQs, and each response can be up to 350 words. These are not traditional essays. In fact, the UC system discourages storytelling or creative writing in this section. Instead, think of each response as a mini-interview question: direct, reflective, and filled with specific examples.

While you can’t create a UC application account just yet, there’s plenty you can do in the meantime. Students can and should begin drafting their PIQs now. The earlier you start, the more time you’ll have to reflect, revise, and get feedback.

For guidance, we recommend checking out the excellent UC Application Playlist from UC Santa Barbara. It’s available in both English and Spanish and walks students through the entire process.

🔍 Ready, Set, Strategize: How to Use the Rest of July Wisely

You don’t need to wait until August 1 to start your application journey. In fact, the most successful students get ahead by preparing early. Here’s how you can make the final stretch of summer count:

  • Up to 10 extracurricular activities
  • The Personal Statement (650 words)

3-Copy and save any college-specific responses and recommender details before July 26
