Saint Louis University Madrid – American Degrees in Spain with Global Opportunities

If you’re imagining earning a U.S. college degree while embracing the vibrant energy of Spain, Saint Louis University–Madrid (SLU-Madrid) might just be the perfect match. It’s where an American liberal arts education meets the lifestyle and culture of one of Europe’s most exciting capitals.

A Rich Heritage and Global Campus

Founded in 1967, SLU-Madrid was the first U.S. university campus established in Europe. Today, it enrolls over 1,300 students from more than 75 countries, creating an inclusive, multicultural community right in the heart of Madrid (SLU-Madrid). Students benefit from the same academic standards as those at the main campus in St. Louis, Missouri, with small classes, individualized attention, and a truly international setting.

Degrees That Fit Your Path

SLU-Madrid offers 22 undergraduate majors and two master’s programs that can be completed entirely in Madrid (Degrees & Programs). Students may also choose from over 40 additional majors that begin in Madrid and conclude at the main St. Louis campus—providing flexible pathways for a wide range of academic interests.

Engineering at SLU-Madrid

One of the most exciting developments is that students can now complete the B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and B.S. in Computer Engineering entirely in Madrid—both U.S. accredited and offering full four-year study options (Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering). All engineering programs at SLU Madrid are also ABET accredited.

Other engineering disciplines—including Aerospace, Biomedical, Electrical, and the unique Chemical Engineering dual-degree (to be completed in 5 years: 2 years in Madrid, 1 year in St. Louis, 2 at Washington University in St. Louis) – still follow the integrated “Madrid + St. Louis” model (Engineering & Aviation Technology).

Nursing and Health Sciences

For Nursing, students spend their first two years in Madrid, including clinical training at Sanitas facilities, and then transfer to St. Louis for the final two years at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital (Nursing at SLU-Madrid). Health sciences and pre-med pathways also begin in Madrid with options to finish in Missouri.

Liberal Arts and Sciences Core

As a Jesuit, liberal arts institution, every student completes the University Undergraduate Core, designed to develop critical thinking, communication, ethics, and global perspective. Whether studying Political Science, International Business, Psychology, or Art History, SLU-Madrid students receive a broad, values-based education alongside their chosen major.

Support Every Step of the Way

SLU-Madrid places a strong emphasis on supporting students both academically and personally. Each student is paired with an academic advisor to help with course planning, majors, and navigating the U.S.–style curriculum. Free tutoring services, disability accommodations, and language support are available to ensure every student thrives.

Beyond academics, the university offers counseling and pastoral care, with resources for mental health, well-being, and spiritual life – welcoming students of all faiths and backgrounds. From career services workshops to volunteer opportunities in Madrid, SLU-Madrid is committed to educating the whole person, true to its Jesuit mission.

A Multicultural Student Experience

SLU-Madrid is home to a student body that represents the world. With students from the U.S., Spain, and dozens of other countries, diversity is celebrated through academic discussions, student clubs, and community service. From the Pride Club to the Asian Culture Club, student organizations provide spaces for students to explore their identities, cultures, and interests.

Living in Madrid also means embracing life in one of Europe’s most student-friendly cities. Housing options include host families, student residences, and private apartments, offering flexibility to fit different preferences and budgets.

Affordability and Value

SLU-Madrid is often more affordable than similar private U.S. universities. Tuition is about €27,000 per year (approx. $29,000), nearly half the cost of many comparable American institutions. Importantly, 77% of students receive some form of merit-based scholarship, and U.S. students can apply their full FAFSA federal financial aid (except workstudy) toward their studies in Madrid.
