Germany’s higher-education landscape is often associated with large public research universities. Alongside them, however, exists a smaller, more practice-oriented sector: Universities of Applied Sciences (Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften). SRH University belongs squarely in this category. It is a private, state-recognized University of Applied Sciences, originally founded in 1969 in Heidelberg, and today operates as a multi-campus university network across Germany.
SRH’s structure reflects both its history and its present-day mission. What began as a single institution has evolved into a unified university system with 18 campuses nationwide. Eight primarily serve German-taught programs, while ten campuses offer English-taught degrees. This distinction allows international students to experience highly international classrooms, even though German students remain the majority across the institution as a whole.
Campuses and Study Locations Across Germany
SRH’s campuses are distributed across Germany’s major cities as well as smaller, more affordable university towns. Larger campuses include Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Heidelberg, with Heidelberg remaining the historic and largest site. Other locations—such as Leipzig, Dresden, and Cologne—offer a quieter pace of life and lower living costs while still hosting English-taught programs and international cohorts.
The Berlin campus, opened at the end of 2024, represents SRH’s newest expansion. Located along the river, it features modern teaching spaces, engineering labs, media studios, and creative facilities. Engineering students work in dedicated automotive and electronics labs, while students in film, music, and media have access to professional-grade studios and equipment that can be reserved free of charge.
Munich is another campus in active development, which formerly housed a professional audio recording studio. Parts of the Munich campus now house high-end sound and music production facilities previously used by professional artists – an unusual and highly hands-on resource for undergraduate students.
Teaching Philosophy: The CORE Principle
One of the most distinctive features of SRH is its CORE teaching model (Competence Oriented Research and Education). Rather than following a traditional semester structure – where students manage many courses simultaneously and face a concentrated exam period – SRH organizes learning into five-week academic blocks.
Students typically focus on one or two subjects at a time, complete assessments at the end of each block, and then move on to the next module. This approach is designed to reduce exam congestion, encourage sustained focus, and support consistent academic engagement throughout the year. For students who prefer structured pacing and applied assessment, this model often feels more manageable and intentional.
Academic Programs and Schools
SRH offers a broad academic portfolio, with more than 340 degree programs across German and English instruction. The English-taught portfolio alone includes over 100 programs, primarily concentrated in the following schools:
School of Arts, Information, and Media
Programs include Advertising & Brand Design, Film & Motion Design, Illustration, Photography, Music Production, Audio Design, Web Development, and Communication. Many of these programs attract both European and North American students and are closely tied to professional practice.
School of Business and Law
The most popular program across the university is International Business Administration, offered in two formats:
- a three-year fast track, or
- a three-and-a-half-year international track, which includes a mandatory internship or semester abroad
Specializations range from Automotive Management and Digital Marketing to Sports Management, Supply Chain, and Business Psychology. SRH also offers MBA programs and a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) in collaboration with the University of Liverpool.
School of Technology and Architecture
Engineering programs reflect Germany’s industrial economy and remain a strong academic focus. Notable offerings include Applied Mechatronic Systems (B.Eng.), Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Sustainable Technology Management. Several programs were developed in collaboration with corporate partners such as Siemens, with industry certifications embedded directly into the curriculum.
Programs in Psychology and most health-related fields are taught in German, reflecting professional licensing and workforce requirements. Exceptions exist at the master’s level, including Dance Movement Therapy and Music Therapy, which have attracted applicants from the U.S. and Canada.
Employability and Industry Connections
As a University of Applied Sciences, SRH is not research-focused and therefore does not appear prominently in global rankings such as QS or Times Higher Education. Instead, the university emphasizes graduate outcomes and employability.
Across programs, more than 90% of SRH bachelor’s graduates find employment within six to eight months of graduation. The university maintains partnerships with over 3,500 corporate partners, giving students early access to internships, part-time roles, and professional networks through internal job portals, career fairs, and employer events.
Internships may be optional or mandatory depending on program structure, and students receive support through SRH’s career services, including CV review, interview preparation, and job-search guidance.
Admissions, Intakes, and Application Process
SRH operates on a rolling admissions basis, with two main intakes per year: April and October. Applications are submitted directly through SRH’s online portal; there is no centralized application system or third-party platform involved.
Applicants may apply up to a year in advance, and conditional offers are common for students still completing high school. Once final transcripts and diplomas are submitted, offers are confirmed.
For U.S. students applying directly to bachelor’s programs, requirements typically include:
- an accredited high school diploma
- a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.7 on the German scale (roughly high C / low B in U.S. terms)
- three AP, honors, or college-prep subjects, depending on the field of study
- portfolios for creative programs
Note: English language tests are waived for native English speakers.
Students who do not meet direct-entry requirements are automatically considered for SRH International College, a foundation-year pathway in business, engineering/IT, or creative studies. Successful completion leads directly into the chosen bachelor’s program without the need to reapply.
Tuition, Scholarships, and Funding Context
As a private institution, SRH charges tuition. Annual bachelor’s tuition typically ranges from approximately USD 8,000 to USD 11,500, depending on the program, duration, and campus location. While these fees may seem high, specifically compared to tuition-free programs at German public universities, they remain comparatively low by U.S., Canadian, or Australian standards.
SRH operates as a non-profit organization, reinvesting tuition revenue into campus development, facilities, and academic expansion. The university offers merit-based scholarships ranging from 10% to 50% of first-year tuition, awarded through a holistic review of academic performance, motivation, extracurricular engagement, and overall student profile.
Housing and Student Support
Housing options vary by campus. Heidelberg offers on-campus, U.S.-style student housing with nearly 800 rooms, expanding toward 1,000. Monthly costs are notably low – under €500 per month – making it one of the most affordable housing options, though demand is high.
In cities such as Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg, SRH works with private student housing providers and offers city-specific accommodation guides. Students receive support navigating local housing markets, including advice on neighborhoods, budgeting, and lease expectations.
Additional student services include:
- academic advising
- international student support
- career services
- internship and job placement guidance
- mobility and exchange coordination through Erasmus+ and other partner programs
Degree Recognition and Academic Mobility
All SRH programs are fully accredited, award ECTS credits, and lead to degrees recognized throughout Germany and the European Higher Education Area. Graduates regularly continue on to master’s programs at other German or European universities – including public research institutions – demonstrating academic mobility beyond the SRH system.
