GCA Visit to USC - Global College Advisers

Visiting USC – The University of Southern California

The picture might be deceiving but no, I did not make a quick trip to Italy but rather just went to the USC counselor conference in Los Angeles.

With an overall student population of 49,500 and about 21,000 undergraduates, USC is one of the largest private universities in the USA. Students can choose from over 200 majors and can get special advising if they declare a pre-professional interest in pre-med, pre-law, pre-health, and pre-teaching.

Since 2022, USC offers also a BS in Legal Studies, the only Bachelor’s at the Gould School of Law

Some of USC’s famous schools include the Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism and the highly esteemed film school, the School of Cinematic Arts, with famous graduates like George Lucas, but also Marshall School of Business, which is ranked among the 15 best business schools (US NEWS). The WBB (World Bachelor in Business) lets students study at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy and at HKUST in Hong Kong as part of the program.  Students receive a degree from each university!

At the USC Thornton School of Music, the oldest continually operating arts institution in L.A., students can study anything from early music to popular music, screen scoring, and much more.

Don’t let the high Cost of Attendance of $90,921 per year deter you. USC has need-blind admission and fully meets USC-determined financial need. Even though international students are not eligible for federal aid, USC may award merit scholarships, and there are also departmental awards.

To determine aid, you need to fill out the CSS Profile (opening up on October 1st!) and submit the FAFSA (this year not open until December 2023).

If USC is high on your list of colleges make sure you apply EA (Early Action), unless you apply for a school that requires a portfolio. Of the final 8,094 admitted students, about 4,500 had applied EA initially. Also know, that if you need financial aid to attend college, you have to apply EA to be considered for aid.

The counselor conference gave a great overview of USC and some of its majors, but to learn more about the great variety of majors offered at the different school at USC, visit USC’s website and sign up for a virtual tour. You can also gain some in-depth knowledge by signing up for information sessions of specific departments like the School of Architecture or the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts & Sciences.
